Lesson 1

This lesson consists of 3 elements

  • Cockpit Drill
  • Controls
  • Moving off and stopping.

There is a lot to remember but these videos and pictures may help remind you of some of the things discussed during Your first lesson. 🙂

Doors: All doors should be checked to ensure they are closed properly. Before exiting the vehicle always check the door mirror and the blind spot to ensure it’s safe to exit the vehicle.

Handbrake: Check the handbrake is in the upright position and the car is secure. The handbrake works on the two rear wheels, the vehicle should never be stopped with the handbrake, it should only be secured with it. The button should be pressed in when applying and releasing the handbrake.

Seat: Adjust the height, position, back and head restraint of the seat. Ensure it is positioned the same every lesson to prevent problems when commencing the manoeuvres later in your driving lessons. 🙂

Steering: Adjust the steering wheel so you can see all clocks, and so your wrists sit nicely on top of the wheel, and when moving your hands to the 12 o’clock position you should have a nice gentle bend in your elbows.

Seatbelt: Make sure you have no twists in the seatbelt or lap belt and ensure it is firmly in its clasp. You are responsible legally for anyone under the age of 14 as well as yourself for the wearing of seatbelts.

Mirrors: The mirrors are made of two different types of glass.
Flat glass, which is in the centre [interior] mirror. The flat glass gives a true representation of what you see… just like the mirrors in your home.
Convex glass, this can be found in both door mirrors. Whilst useful for giving a wide angle of view, it makes things appear smaller, and therefore further await. Don’t make any decisions based on these mirrors alone.

The mirrors should be set up as shown below.

These videos show what the controls are, what they are for and how they are used.

Moving Off and Stopping

The acronyms used here are

  • POM: Prepare, Observe & Move – [this is explained below]
  • NDP: Normal Driving position – [1 metre from the kerb]
  • SCALP: Safe Convenient & Legal Place – [to park]
  • MSM: Mirror, Signal, Move

Safe, Convenient and Legal places to park

To bring vehicle to a stop next to kerb

Is everything safe in mirrors

Steer lightly left towards kerb (eyes well ahead),

Off gas, pause, very gently brake (but not enough to stop yet)

Steer slightly right until car is straight, then straighten up steering wheel slightly left until straight whilst putting…

Clutch FULLY down to the floor

Brake lightly to a complete stop (KEEP BOTH FEET DOWN UNTIL ADVISED NOT TOO)

Handbrake on onto upright position

Gears into neutral Position

REST FEET
